Etched on the ends of this large brass hourglass is the god Cronus the father of time who is holding a scythe and surrounded by the 12 signs of the zodiac, on the inside are the Roman numerals from 1 to 12. The sands of time are held in place with symmetrical bulbs. This one has a duration of roughly 57 minutes.
The hourglass (not this particular one) dates back to the 14th century and was mostly used on ships where it had a few uses, one of which was to accurately calculate the ship’s speed.
