Description
These are the eight divine horses of Emperor Wang Mu (of the 10th century) and the 5th emperor of the Zhou dynasty. Well, they were not his personally. These horses have been carved within the last century, and represent the admiration of the emperor for these wonderful horses.
The legend is that these horses pulled his chariot into the heavens where he hooked up with his lover, the goddess Xi WangMu. There in the heavens, he could taste the peaches of immortality.
Each horse was known for its own special ability. One of the horses could gallop without touching the ground. While another could run faster than flying birds. One horse could run especially fast at night and another horse could run as fast as the shadow of the sun.
There was an especially well-groomed horse with a splendid mane and a horse that could run so fast that you could see a row of ten images of him. Another rode on a cloud and one had wings.
Eventually, the horses grew old and on retirement, they were put out into the greenest of the emperor’s meadows to graze until their end of days. This is symbolized by the horse on its back, representing liberation from the harness.
These fine miniature sculptures carved out of wood each initialled on their base are in my opinion outstanding. The only downside is that the horse on its back has lost his rear canons and hoofs, which you may not have noticed had I not pointed it out. Even so, they still make a wonderful and complete collection.
