Description

“Baby Seal” is a charming lithograph by “Billie Waters” (1895-1965). Born Phyllis Mary Waters in Richmond, Surrey, she studied under influential artists at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art and the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Waters honed her craft further while living in Newlyn, Cornwall, refining her technique, and worked closely with notable figures like Ernest Procter and Harold Harvey, who shaped her approach to art.

Later in her career, Waters became interested in animal painting, frequently working at London Zoo. As suggested by the period style of its frame, this print, “Baby Seal,” was probably produced in the 1930s by “W.J. Stacey”, a London-based colour collotype firm. Known for its exceptional quality, Stacey’s firm collaborated with Waters on multiple occasions. The soft, lifelike portrayal of the seal pup reflects Waters’ unique talent for capturing animals in serene, natural settings, making this a sought-after piece for collectors of her work. Waters passed away in 1965, contrary to many published sources. The print is a true gem and an original from the past.
