Description

An interesting decorative plate depicting the Aztec Sun Stone also known as the Aztec Calendar Stone. In the centre of the plate is believed to be Tonatiuh the Aztec sun god. The original stone was also used as a place of sacrifice, human sacrifice that is, where with razor-sharp obsidian blades Aztec priests would cut out the hearts of those who were chosen to be sacrificed and then offer those hearts, which were still beating in most cases, to the gods. The Aztecs believed that performing this sacrificial ritual would ward off the end of the world. What a wonderful thing if you like the Aztec culture.

The plate is made of Mexican alpaca silver and has a mosaic surround of abalone shell.

Note: Stand not included.
