Description
This wonderful longsnout seahorse sculpture is likely made from polished buffalo horn, a material commonly used for fine carvings in Mexican folk art. Seahorses, including the Caribbean species found near Cozumel, symbolize tranquillity and protection. Cozumel itself has deep roots in Mayan culture and was a major pilgrimage site dedicated to the goddess Ixchel who was associated with fertility, childbirth, and the moon. Mayan women would make a sacred journey by canoe from the mainland (near modern day Xcaret) to Cozumel at least once in their lives to seek blessings for marriage, fertility, and healthy childbirth. San Gervasio, a prominent archaeological site on the island, was the central hub for worshiping Ixchel, where offerings were made, and vows were consummated. The journey across the 18 mile stretch of sea was both a physical and spiritual test, and modern day re-enactments still honour this ancient tradition.
