Vintage Candlesticks Decorated with George Valliamy’s Dolphins

Victorian in style this unique pair of candlesticks have marble bases and have been gilded with brass. They are in fair condition for their age although the gilded brass has worn and both bases have fine cracks. None of this however takes away their extravagant look and beautifully detailed dolphins which were originally designed by George John Vulliamy in the 19th century to decorate the bases of lamp posts along the river Thames. This dolphin design can be seen at the Victoria and Albert embankments, and I have even seen them in Spain. The style of these candlesticks was probably influenced by the Yablochkov candle.
